Arts Advocacy Events with Randy Cohen

On Monday, September 30 at 6 pm the Houston Arts Alliance is hosting an Arts Advocacy Briefing with Randy Cohen from Americans for the Arts generously hosted at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Randy is the original architect of the decades-long Arts and Economic Prosperity study, for which Houston Arts Alliance is the local participant.

TIME: 6pm to 7:30 pm

LOCATION: The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts

Park in the Hobby Center Garage located on Walker street. Your parking will be validated at the check-in for the event. Walk up the breezeway past the Lexus cars and turn right to enter the lobby and head to Founders Club. The Hobby Center will have staff inside to help guide you. Presentation begins at 6:00pm, venue will be open starting at 5:00pm for guests to arrive. Presentation will last approximately 90 minutes.

  • The arts are a net income generator for the City of Houston. The arts help pay the city’s bills. 

    • The nonprofit arts generate $31,839,097 in tax revenue for the City of Houston. 

    • The nonprofit arts employ 19,552 individuals in the City of Houston. 

  • The nonprofit arts generate $873,237,692 dollars in household income in the City of Houston.  

    • Out of town visitors generate $280,072,453 in different types of revenue, including City of Houston revenue, thanks to the nonprofit arts in the City of Houston. 

    • More than 1/3 of the attendees to nonprofit arts events are from out of town, and they spend 50% more than locals, bringing in non-local revenue to the City of Houston. 

    • In addition, City of Houston locals account for 10,653,280 attendees at nonprofit arts events, spending $378,748,175 on these events.

Randy has generously received a slot on the City Council Budget and Finance Affairs committee on October 1st at 10 am. This committee reviews monthly financial reports and addresses all matters related to the city’s annual budget, debt model, and financial policies. Council Member Sallie Alcorn serves as chair and Council Member Mario Castillo serves as vice chair. This meeting will offer the options to participate via videoconference or in-person.
