Houston Arts Alliance is pleased to announce it is the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for “Arts Projects Spotlighting the Spirit of Sports”. In anticipation of FIFA World Cup 2026™ being hosted in the United States, these grants are supporting arts projects that celebrate American creativity and highlight local artistic and cultural traditions in connection with soccer-related celebrations.
A $30,000 grant will support the development and production of a documentary film about soccer’s impact on community life in Houston, Texas. Houston Arts Alliance, in partnership with the Houston Cinema Arts Society, will produce a 20- to 30-minute documentary film or a series of short films exploring how soccer shapes local community life and how the sport serves as a gathering point within neighborhoods, connecting local storytelling and creative skill-building.
NEA Chairman Mary Anne Carter said, “As audiences around the world focus on this global moment, the National Endowment for the Arts is excited to support these community-centered projects that link American cultural expression and highlight local creativity with the excitement of international soccer.”
This project will document soccer’s role as a cultural and social gathering point in Houston neighborhoods, capturing the lived experiences of players, families, coaches, and residents whose daily lives are connected to the sport. It will reflect the city’s rich cultural life, shared traditions, and community pride.
